CACAO HISTORY

The origins of cacao can be traced back to the Ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who held it in such high regard that it was deemed as precious as gold. The consumption of cacao was reserved only for the elite members of their societies, as it was believed to be the divine "Food of the Gods." Cacao was not just a food item but a sacred medicine that played a crucial role in their communities, economies, and religions. The word "cacao" finds its roots in the Mayan word "Ka'kau." According to the Mayan and Aztecan creation myths, cacao was integral to the very essence of humans, as it formed a part of their blood and hearts.

CACAO TODAY

Cacao cultivation is a global phenomenon, with key regions including Bali, Africa, Central, and South America. Despite Europe and North America producing only 30% of the world's cacao, they consume 70%. It's crucial to consider ethical and sustainable practices in cacao sourcing, as smallholder farmers, who rely on cacao for their livelihoods and earn less than $2 a day, are its primary cultivators. Supporting ethical sourcing promotes fair trade and helps improve farmers' living conditions.
